Our story

Growing up in Panama, founder Liz Crowther saw from a young age how environmental stewardship affected people just as much as the ecosystem. The way communities manage waste tells a great deal about balance of public health, proper use of taxpayer’s dollars, and a promise to future generations by investing in sustainable waste management systems.

In 2020, the office I worked in received hundreds of calls and emails from residents who found themselves at home, all day, during lockdown. Families were purging their homes and had more questions than answers: are CDs recyclable? What do I do with 30 cans of paint that’s been in the garage for a decade? Already obsessed with recycling, it took me just a few days to realize how intricately connected we’re all tied to what we throw out, and how important it is to connect residents with programs, services, and resources to lower waste at home and work.

The 7+ years serving local and federal government waste management systems offers a unique understanding of how to navigate the world of waste. From navigating waste hauler contracts to convincing your family to compost their food scraps, the Low Waste Collective uses education, agency of action, and corporate responsibility to help businesses get ready to minimize their waste through successful waste auditing.
